Energy Transition in Germany: Guest Lectures at DKU
Video Contest on Green Nudges at Universities in Central Asia and South Caucasus
On October 21, the Kazakh-German University welcomed two guest professors from Germany — Prof. Dr. Michael Kranhold from 50Hertz (Elia Group) and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Haubrock from Hochschule Bielefeld – University of Applied Sciences.
During their guest lectures at DKU, the professors shared Germany’s progress toward a climate-neutral energy system and the role of technology and innovation in that transition.
Prof. Kranhold presented the experience of 50Hertz, one of the four major transmission system operators in Germany, managing over 10,800 km of high-voltage lines across eastern Germany and Hamburg and supplying energy to about 18 million people. He discussed the company’s ambitious goal — to achieve 100% renewable electricity consumption by 2032, supported by more than €20 billion in green investments and offshore wind projects.
Prof. Haubrock introduced the activities of Hochschule Bielefeld, where he leads research groups on Netze und Energiesysteme (AGNES) and Hydrogen in the Industry and Energy Sector (AG WIES). His lecture focused on “The Status of Energy Transition in Germany” and “Power System Protection, E-Mobility, Hydrogen and Power System Operation with a High Share of Renewables” — highlighting how emerging technologies and hydrogen infrastructure are shaping the future of Europe’s energy landscape.
The meeting concluded with a dynamic discussion between students, professors, and both guest lecturers on how Germany’s expertise in renewable integration and system stability could inspire sustainable solutions for Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
