NEXUS Project

December 2, 2021 The Center for Natural Resources and Sustainability at DKU launched the project “Training for Government Officials from Central Asia on Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus”. This project is supported by The USAID Regional Water and Vulnerable Environment Activity.

Objective of the project:

Improve the skills of government representatives through training with regional experts in the field of natural resource management.

Project beneficiaries:

Mid-level civil servants (at the level of heads of departments/divisions) participating and/or contributing to the formation of national policy in the field of water, energy or food security.

Expected results of the project:
  • The knowledge acquired by government officials (decision makers) will be useful for their daily work, as well as for disseminating the NEXUS assessment approach to the general public.
  • A professional network has been created among mid-level professionals from various ministries related to the management of water and energy resources in the countries of Central Asia, which will gradually move from the national to the regional level.

The project will directly contribute to achieving the goals of The USAID Regional Water and Vulnerable Environment Activity through:

  1. Developing the capacity of politicians and civil servants of ministries and departments of the Central Asian countries at the regional, national and local levels;
  2. Using a “training of the trainers” approach to ensure the sustainability, replication and scaling of the project.

Actual results:

On the basis of the training manual 6 model studies were prepared for full discussion and dialogue. National experts from 5 countries in Central Asia were involved.

The most acceptable, according to experts' opinion, modular methodological approach for training in conducting nexus assessment has been proposed. A joint process of approbation of this "Model Modular Methodology for Non-Quality Assessment Training" is underway. Trainings have been conducted in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

The most appropriate and effective method and process that best satisfies the understanding of the nexus approach to macro-regional resource assessment has been agreed upon.

"Model Modular Methodology for Nexus Assessment Training" has been proposed for review and adoption according to the rules, requirements, procedures, and timeframes for organizations and universities of each country of the region.
