The training for civil servants of the Kyrgyz Republic was conducted by the Kazakh-German University with the support of the USAID Regional Water and Vulnerable Environment Activity.

The training was attended by 29 people (of which 52% were women) representing (Figure 1) - state bodies (63% of the total number of participants), local governments and municipal enterprises (13%), as well as universities (24%) from 13 organizations.

In addition to representatives of the central divisions (Bishkek), the event was attended by government officials from Chui, Issyk-Kul, Osh and Jalal-Abad regions of the Kyrgyz Republic (15% of all participants). These participants noted that they very rarely take part in such capacity building events and are interested in them in the future.

At the initial stage of the training, the participants received detailed information about the project itself, its goals, objectives and approaches. Lecturers presented regional case studies illustrating NEXUS approaches, and also explained approaches to assessing non-economic benefits from joint consideration. The international development agenda is also described, including NEXUS approaches - Sustainable Development Goals, international conventions, etc.

The policy and institutional framework of the Kyrgyz Republic on the issues under consideration was presented. To intensify the analysis of the activities of their organizations and NEXUS approaches, the “brainstorming” method was used, combining the structure of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic and the place of each state body in the overall NEXUS scheme, taking into account the SDGs.

Case Study No. 3 “Groundwater Management: Aquifer in a Transboundary Perspective” was then presented based on the notional macro-region of the Itan transboundary aquifer basin.

The second day of the training began with a brief presentation - a reminder of the materials received during the first day, including clarifications on the modular approach and how it will be used during the joint work at the training. Then the participants were divided according to 2 teams representing the roles in the governments of the countries “Motan” (country A) and “Ramenia” (from Case Study #3). During the day, participants were presented with tasks to assess natural resources and opportunities for cooperation between model countries.

At the end of the training, all participants were presented with certificates.
