Aral Sea Basin and Lake Chad Basin - a space for interdisciplinary knowledge generation and sharing for sustainable governance of river basins amidst climate crisis (Acronym – ASB&LCB SPACE)

Project objective:

The project aims to enhance the quality of interdisciplinary education and knowledge sharing, strengthen existing capacities and promote innovative research in two focus regions – the Aral Sea Basin and the Lake Chad Basin regions.

Brief project description:

The project will enhance knowledge on topics such as Water Governance & Cooperation, Economics in Water Management, Climate Change, Water & Security, Agriculture & Food Security, Gender aspects in Water politics, and similar. This will be achieved mainly by developing a new Teaching module called - “A socially-just water economy for river basin management (RBM).”

All the above-mentioned aspects are relevant for both basins Aral Sea Basin and Lake Chad Basin, and would help to address the local needs and challenges. The online/offline Mobility opportunities within the MA programs (DKU – MP in IWRM; MP in Sustainable Business Management; TIIAME – MP in Economics in Water Management; UNN – MP in Hydrology and Environmental Management) offered by some of the partners of the consortium will at the same time foster knowledge-sharing on climate change, its effect on water and more effective ways of accessing water resources.

The project includes Summer Schools that will vest students, early career water professionals and academic staff incl. PhD students, involved in teaching, with local knowledge and hands-on experience applicable to the Aral Sea Basin and Lake Chad Basin regions.

Furthermore, the two Train-the-trainers courses (ToT) are foreseen within this project as to prepare lecturers, so they can deliver training in their area of expertise in the most comprehensive, concise and cohesive way. As the project focuses on river basin governance and management, the course will cover mainly Water Governance, Water Economics and Policy, Gender aspects of Water Politics, Environmental Justice, and similar.

Last but not least, the project aims to fill the existing information and knowledge gap about the management and governance of the Aral Sea Basin and Lake Chad Basin as well as improve academic writing and publishing skills through the Publication of academic papers in journals such as Central Asian Journal of Water Research (CAJWR), Security Journal or Scientific Journal Ikenga.

Expected results:

1) Teaching module - “A socially-just water economy for river basin management (RBM)”

2) Mobility between universities in the project consortia

3) 6 Summer Schools in total organised at Aral Sea Basin and Lake Chad Basin

4) 2 Train-the-trainers course (ToTs)
